Product carbon footprint: what it is and how it's calculated

Most of your product’s emissions aren’t where you’re looking. Not in the plant, not in the machines: they sit upstream, in the raw materials and energy that never even show up on your factory’s bill. So when a customer asks for “the carbon footprint”, measuring only what happens inside your walls leaves out what weighs most.

A product carbon footprint (PCF) is the total amount of greenhouse gases — expressed in carbon dioxide equivalent, CO₂e — associated with a product across its life cycle, calculated under the international standard ISO 14067. It’s a number per unit of product, not per company. And that distinction changes everything.

What separates a product footprint from a corporate one

A corporate footprint measures the whole organisation’s emissions over a year (its Scopes 1, 2 and 3). A product footprint measures those of one specific product: a tonne of cement, a litre of juice, a pair of shoes. One answers “how much does my company emit?”; the other, “how much does this thing I sell emit?”.

The buyer emailing you almost always wants the second. A corporate inventory is a good starting point — it uses the same underlying accounting — but it doesn’t replace the per-product calculation. Confusing the two is the most common reason a company hands over data the buyer can’t use.

How it’s calculated, step by step

Calculating a PCF doesn’t depend on the software, but on defining the scope well and gathering quality data. In order:

  1. Functional unit and system boundary. Decide what unit you measure (1 kg, 1 item, 1 litre) and how far the study reaches: cradle-to-gate (raw materials to factory gate) or cradle-to-grave (including use and end of life). It’s the decision that most shapes the result.
  2. Life cycle inventory. Gather the flows: materials, energy, fuels, transport, waste. This is a Life Cycle Assessment scoped to carbon.
  3. Emission factors. Each flow gets its factor (how much CO₂e it represents). Here you choose between primary data from your operation or database averages.
  4. Calculation and interpretation. Everything is summed in CO₂e and the hotspots are identified: where the bulk of emissions sits and, therefore, where it makes sense to cut.

Primary data versus averages: where credibility is won or lost

The mistake we see most: filling the calculation with generic database averages when the buyer — or CBAM itself — asks for primary data from your installation. The average is fast, but it’s harder to defend and sometimes worse than your plant’s reality.

Cradle-to-gate or cradle-to-grave?

It depends on the purpose. If the product’s use and end of life are irrelevant or identical across alternatives, cradle-to-gate is enough and cheaper. If the product consumes energy in use (an appliance) or its end of life matters (packaging), you need cradle-to-grave for the comparison to be fair. Picking the wrong boundary is the most common way for two footprints to “not compare”.

Is the ISO 14067 standard mandatory?

It isn’t mandatory by law, but it is the international reference standard for product footprints. Calculating under ISO 14067 (built on LCA, ISO 14040/44) is what makes the result comparable and credible to buyers and verifiers.

What is carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e)?

It’s the unit that sums all greenhouse gases by converting them to their CO₂ equivalent according to their warming potential. It lets you express the footprint as a single number.

Do I need external verification?

For internal use or a first conversation, no. To communicate the footprint publicly or meet demanding requirements, third-party verification gives the robustness buyers expect.

Does a product footprint feed into an EPD?

Yes. The PCF is one of the pieces of an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). If you expect to need an EPD, it pays to calculate the footprint with that continuity in mind.
